I got the idea for this book when I first heard about the Transhumanists.
The book is available at Books On Demand (BoD.se), Amazom.com or other online bookshops. Look for ”AT Jonsson”.
Eternal life, mankind’s age-old dream: to live forever without ever having to die. This theme is already present in the Epic of Gilgamesh, considered the world’s oldest literary work. King Gilgamesh of Uruk sets out in search of the one who can grant him eternal life. Now, in the twenty-first century, many hope that science and technology will take us there. The global organisation Transhumanists believes that death can be overcome with the help of science.
In this fictional story, we follow Normina, whose greatest fear is growing old and falling ill. When she is offered the chance to avoid old age and death by having her consciousness transferred into an artificial body, she seizes the opportunity, even though her best friend Valery is not given the same chance. Normina is too tempted by eternal life to turn it down, even though this means breaking a sacred promise they made to each other: to always stand by one another’s side – for the rest of their lives.
In the mysterious Colony, which hides from the rest of the world behind an electronic signal barrier, live Eve and Adam, who long to be granted permission to become parents. Eve is a priest in a congregation that practises its faith in a Creator and the hope of eternal life after death. Adam is a technician and works on maintaining the signal barrier. Someone in Eve’s congregation is spreading a myth about a city somewhere outside the colony where people are said to live forever. The authorities suspect a threat to the security and unity of the colony and demand that she reveal who it is. In return, they will grant her permission to have the long-awaited child. But to do so, Eve must betray the trust placed in her as a congregation leader.
